About This Typewriter

This Hermes Baby portable typewriter was manufactured in Switzerland in 1948. It has a low grey crinkle-finished body, black keys and the distinctive gull-wing ribbon covers associated with this generation of the Hermes Baby.

Its compact dimensions and close-fitting carrying case made it easy to transport. The machine combines a full four-row QWERTY keyboard with a body small enough to carry like a briefcase.

A Successful Swiss Ultraportable

Paillard introduced the Hermes Baby in 1935. Its compact construction reduced the size and weight of a conventional portable typewriter while retaining a practical four-row keyboard.

The redesigned version introduced around 1940 featured pointed gull-wing ribbon covers and a slim carrying case. This 1948 example comes from the postwar production of that long-running design.

Condition When Sold

The machine was in good working condition when sold. Its exterior showed some scuffs and other signs of previous use.

It was cleaned, checked and fitted with a new black ribbon while it was part of the former My Cup of Retro shop. Its original carrying case was also included.
