About This Typewriter
The Hammond Multiplex used a type shuttle and hammer instead of conventional typebars. Pressing a key rotated the curved shuttle to the correct character. A hammer then struck the paper against the inked character.
The rotating central holder carried two type shuttles. Turning it allowed the typist to change typefaces without replacing the entire mechanism. This example has PICA and italic typefaces.

The Hammond Multiplex
The Hammond Typewriter Company introduced the Multiplex in 1913. Its dual-shuttle system allowed one machine to type in two fonts, alphabets or sets of specialist characters.
Hammond produced interchangeable shuttles for different languages, scientific symbols and styles of lettering. The unusual system made the Multiplex especially useful when a standard typewriter could not supply the required characters.
Condition When Sold
My Cup of Retro restored this machine and reconditioned its impression rubber. It was working when sold, although the PICA shuttle occasionally stuck.
The keys showed some discoloration, and the right side was missing its shift-adjustment screws. The exterior remained in good vintage condition. Its original wooden base and cover were included.
